The Totally Improvised Company turns 24 this year as we celebrate our very first ComedySportz match. Join us at the theatre where it all began, Chorley Theatre this weekend for our birthday show!

Since November 2001 we've been entertaining audiences of all ages with our quick-witted gags and games. We've enjoyed rave reviews, sold out shows at venues and festivals across the UK, and we've even performed for royalty. ComedySportz won Best Alternative Act at the North West Comedy Awards in 2022 and earlier this year was nominated for Best Kids Show at The Leicester Comedy Festival – Europe’s biggest comedy festival. Not to mention our other shows, our workshops and courses or running the first Greater Manchester Improv Festival in 2025!

Totally Improvised Tour!

We've just about recovered from a bumper Edinburgh Fringe and now The Totally Improvised Musical is going on tour this Autumn. Don't miss the opening night of your very own musical as we take the show to venues across the North of England. We hope this will be the precursor to an even bigger nationwide tour in 2025.

With live musical accompaniment our cast compose comedy musicals based on a title given by the audience. Scenes, songs and stories are made up on the spot and there may even be some “dancing”. Everything is composed in the moment and on the edge of your seats!

“The cast have no clue about the characters, choruses, choreography or even what key we're meant to be in until we get the title of that night's musical from the audience,” explains Sean. “The person whose title we pick gets a free pin badge. If that’s not enough to tempt you in, I don’t know what is.” 

Earlier this year, the show was nominated for Best Variety Show at The Leicester Comedy Festival - Europe's biggest comedy festival - and has been picking up rave reviews ever since. We're very excited to be taking the show on tour this Autumn.

Previous show titles have included Frankenstein Joins an Acapella Group, Lawnmowers: The Musical, My Grandma Is a Parasite, The First Primark in Space and Penguins Don’t Eat Cheese. “Some nights you end up singing a really touching love song and sometimes you end up doing a dance about ham,” laughs Sean. “There’s something kind of magic about a show that only exists for one night. Audiences have come again and again knowing they’ll get a totally different but still totally great show!”

An Improvised Pantomime? Oh yes it is!

The Totally Improvised Pantomime returns this December and tickets are selling fast. With shows across Greater Manchester and Chorley, don't miss out on the all festive fun! An alternative to traditional pantos, this show sees our players create brand new adventures from your suggestions and a sprinkling of fairy dust.

There will be plenty of songs, silliness and maybe even a little bit of sauciness from our Panto Dame. There is something for everyone with family friendly and adults only versions. You've never seen a panto like this before!

UPDATE: Due to popular demand we have added a family friendly date to Chorley Theatre! The 6.30pm show at Waterside Arts on December 9th is now sold out.

The Totally Improvised Musical Comes To Chorley!

We're delighted to be bringing The Totally Improvised Musical to Chorley Theatre on Friday 27th of May. Join us for a night of completely unscripted, totally unmissable songs and laughter!

It's opening (and closing) night for two brand new musicals inspired by your suggestions. Previous shows have featured such weird and wonderful stories as a prison break where no one wanted to escape, a tale of hobbits vs greedy land developers, and a heart warming tale of tube drivers who dream of being west-end stars!

ComedySportz returns to Chorley Youth Theatre

We played our first ComedySportz Match in 2001 as part of Chorley Youth Theatre. Now we’re back at Chorley Theatre on Friday 19th November to celebrate twenty years of laughs. As part of the celebrations, original team founder Brainne Edge and Chorley player Stephen Catterall returned to Chorley Youth Theatre to teach some comedy skills to the next generation of performers.

“It was fantastic to meet the kids who were us over twenty years ago!” says Brainne, who was running the Youth Theatre in 2001. “What a great bunch full of enthusiasm and talent, I'm really hoping some will audition for us in a few years time!”

The team taught the group of young performers some of the skills of comedy improvisation as well as the games we’ve been entertaining audiences with for two decades. Brainne adds, “Improv builds confidence, communication and keeps us playful, even as we get older. These kids had such a natural talent for being in the moment and are very funny. It's the spirit of play and imagination that has kept us going for so long.”
